Bar Bites

Japan made an AI-powered tool to give no-contact blood pressure and diabetes screenings

Tl:dr

  • The system uses high-speed video and AI to analyze changes in blood flow patterns, analyzing 30 regions of the face and palm.

  • A 30-second video imaging/algorithm combo in a subset was 86% accurate in detecting if blood pressure was above normal, while a 5-second video/algorithm combo was 81% accurate

  • The video imaging/algorithm combo was 94% accurate in detecting stage 1 hypertension according to the American Heart Association’s guidelines for blood pressure 130/80 mm Hg or higher

  • The video/algorithm combo was 75% accurate in identifying people with diabetes

Our take

This is the type of iron man sh*t we were all hoping for when we first heard about AI. Stop making weaponized attack dogs that will try to end humanity (looking at you Boston dynamics), and make more of these game changing tools to help humanity.

AI Beatles song nominated for a Grammy

Tl:dr

  • The song earned nominations for Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance

  • The track used AI "stem separation" technology to clean up and isolate John Lennon's vocals from a 1978 unreleased demo.

Our take

Initial reaction - shaking with anger and physically ill. Why are we doing this, why. Please don’t let the robots ruin music.

After reading more, it’s not as bad as it sounds. It’s a real recording of John Lennon. But I’m not going to let them off the hook completely. This opens the door for ai enhanced, edited, and recreated songs everywhere to start coming out of the woodwork. 5 more years and we aren’t even going to know what’s real.

Also.. RECORD OF THE YEAR?? Are you kidding! What a slap in the face to everyone in the running for this. The Grammy’s have long been out of touch, but nominating an AI track that resurrected dead for 45 years john lennon is bad even for them.

The American Who Waged a Tech War on China

Tl:dr

  • Jake Sullivan, as U.S. National Security Advisor, has played a central role in implementing policies aimed at restricting China’s access to critical technology, notably in the semiconductor and AI sectors, as part of a strategy to limit China's technological rise

  • This policy has led to heightened tensions with China, impacting diplomatic and trade relations, as China seeks alternatives to bypass U.S. restrictions and accelerate its own tech independence

Our take

This one isn’t news, but is a very interesting read if you have time.

It’s always surprising reading stories like this to find out how much power and influence certain people have over the direction of governments.

China/US relations will certainly be a hot topic with Trump coming back in, and some policy shifts will certainly present some interesting trading opportunities. Good to know how we got here to predict the near future.

Crypto market cap hits $3.1T high, may soon surpass France’s GDP

Tl;dr

  • Crypto market capitalization has reached a new all-time high of $3.12 trillion

  • If the crypto market were a country, it would be the eighth-largest in GDP terms behind the United States, China, Germany, Japan, India, the United Kingdom and France.

Our take

Meet the AI robot whose artwork sold for over $1m

Tl;dr

  • One of the most advanced robots in the world, Ai-Da, is a pioneering humanoid artist

  • A portrait of mathematician Alan Turing is thought to be the first artwork by a humanoid robot to be sold at auction - fetching $1,084,800

Our Take

They say art is in the eye of the beholder. So we’d just like to say big ups to the developers of this robot. Selling this stupid fuckin thing artwork for $1m is one of the best scams uses of technology we’ve seen in a while.

Plz stop forcing robots into the art world, you’re killing the real creatives’ souls.
