🗿 Is AI The Next Cold War?

US, Britain and other Western nations shape AI agreements as China and Russia double down on development

GM. Over a dozen Western nations signed an (unbinding) agreement this week on the safe development on AI. In response, Russia (and indirectly China) announced plans to prevent a “Western monopoly”.

Will AI be the epicenter of the next global conflict? Or will it neutralize war forever? Disclaimer, I’ve watched a lot of sci-fi movies, but not a huge fan of where this is going.

Without Further Ado. ☕ *knuckle cracks* ☕ Let’s get into it.

East vs West: Is AI The Next Cold War?

US, Britain and other Western nations shape AI agreements as China and Russia double down on development. Is AI – with its exponential military potential – shaping up to become the next major East-West conflict?

Just this week, the US and Britain, along with a dozen other countries, signed an agreement on how to keep artificial intelligence safe.

Within the same time frame, Putin announced plans for a national strategy around the development of AI – with an emphasis on preventing a Western monopoly.

Putin spoke at an AI conference in Moscow last week, noting the following:

"it’s imperative to use Russian solutions in the field of creating reliable and transparent artificial intelligence systems that are also safe for humans".

"Monopolistic dominance of such foreign technology in Russia is unacceptable, dangerous, and inadmissible," Putin said.

Meanwhile, China is gearing up for a major next wave of tech funding after a relatively quiet year.

Bloomberg reported that Chinese investors (‘half-jokingly’) didn’t want to tell foreign journalists about their promising homegrown AI chipmakers, for fear of alerting the US government.

Ok sure, let’s call it a joke – but it’s also a glimmer of light into the broader conflict between Western and Eastern tech.

Through the lens of business, things can get messy, as we saw with the Binance debacle. But when you bring military conflict into the tech conversation, things can get ugly fast.

We’ll be monitoring this trend through 2024.
