Friday hot takes to take to the bar

In partnership with

No Fomo Moai Mascot

GM. Happy Friday. Today we’re trying out a new format, which we are calling bar bites. We’re going to arm you with some hot topics to bring up while you’re grabbing after work drinks or anywhere else you might be this weekend. We’ll give you an opinion to go along with or challenge without sounding like a complete nerd.

Without Further Ado. ☕ *knuckle cracks* ☕ Let’s get into it.

The fastest way to build AI apps

  • Writer Framework: build Python apps with drag-and-drop UI

  • API and SDKs to integrate into your codebase

  • Intuitive no-code tools for business users

Bar Bites

Boston Dynamics and Toyota team up to make humanoids

Tl:dr

  • Boston Dynamics and the Toyota Research Institute announced a new partnership to accelerate development of advanced humanoids

  • Toyota’s large behavior models will teach robots to handle multi-task, dexterous vision, and language-guided capabilities

Our take

These are two very advanced and powerful companies, so the partnership is significant. However, there are several other significant players in the humanoid game so this might not matter if they don’t win the race.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that this is once again the precursor to the plot of iRobot. I don’t think it’s going to matter if the humanoid that’s trying to kill you has a Toyota or a Tesla logo on it, so who cares who wins the race.

Air Canada is using AI to solve canceled flights

Tl:dr

  • Air Canada is using AI to re-accommodate passengers affected by flight disruptions like cancellations or big delays. The AI system offers new travel solutions within just 10 minutes, ensuring quicker rebooking than could be offered by human customer service

  • Even in scenarios involving large-scale disruptions, the AI tool is capable of handling numerous passengers efficiently

Our take

Finally these robots are doing something real to make our lives easier. Every airline should be doing this. End of story. How is Air Canada the only one?

AI helped the feds catch $1 billion of fraud in one year

Tl:dr

  • The Treasury Department credited AI with helping officials prevent and recover more than $4 billion worth of fraud overall in fiscal 2024, a six-fold spike from the year before

  • The AI system detects suspicious transactions and expedites recovery from financial institutions

  • AI identifies subtle patterns in large datasets that would be difficult for humans to detect

Our take

Realistically this is a very useful application of the technology. But, it seems a little scary. What if they get carried away?

We don’t support crime that hurts people, but maybe some “fraud” is just a little payback to the people. How about we use AI to comb over all the government spending and reimburse the irregularities back to the taxpayer?

Elon changing X’s privacy policy to allow AI training on your posts

Tl;dr

  • On Wednesday, X updated its Privacy Policy to indicate that it would allow third-party “collaborators” to train their AI models on X data

  • Users are automatically included in this unless they opt out

  • The updated privacy policy won’t become effective until November 15

Our take

I understand why this is happening, but I don’t like it. I don’t think any of our readers nor the general public is proud of the giant townie bar we’ve created on twitter. It’s a fun place, but it’s not something I’d even want my parents figuring out how to use, much less training entire systems of intelligence with. Can we just not.
