Google Wants To Scrape The Internet 🌐

Google is now scraping everything you post online to build its AI tools 🫣

What ya need to know

  • Google updated its privacy policy – explicitly saying that it reserves the right to harvest and harness data posted on any part of the public web. Yikessss

  • This is an unusual clause for a privacy policy. And we have some questions.

  • One of the less apparent complications… where do data-hungry chatbots source their information??

  • As it turns out, the big dogs – namely Google and OpenAI – scraped vast portions of the internet to fuel their robot habits, and it's unclear whether this is legal.

Let the data wars begin…

  • Users are already affected by the data wars, as Twitter and Reddit turn off free access to their API to prevent data harvesting. This broke third-party tools that many people used to access those sites.

  • On Reddit, the effect of API changes was particularly noisy, and it's likely to have permanent consequences as spurned moderators hang up their hats.

What does this mean for you?

  • If you post anything online, assume that Google can read it and that it might be used to train its AI tools.

  • This could include things like your blog posts, restaurant reviews, and even private messages.

  • It's not clear what Google will do with this data, but it's possible that it could be used to create chatbots that mimic your writing style or target you with advertising.

What can you do?

  • You can read Google's privacy policy to learn more about how your data is used. Lol have fun reading that

  • You can also use privacy-focused tools like DuckDuckGo and ProtonMail to reduce the data you share with Google. Encrypted is the future…

  • Be mindful of what you post online, and consider whether you're comfortable with Google having access to it.

TLDR; your life on the Internet fuels Big Data and AI. Be careful what you put out there.
