Bar Bites

Meta is working on an ai powered search engine

Tl:dr

  • Meta is working on a search engine to decrease its dependence on Google and Microsoft

  • They have been working in silence for over 7 months, crawling the web for data

  • They could compete with google maps

Our take

It seems like every few years when a new trend really takes hold, Meta tries to build their own version of something that isn’t ripe for disruption. Google is pretty good at search.

Do they really think they can compete or is this just an excuse to collect more data? Zuck is a lot of things, but stupid isn’t one of them. We have our doubts they are wasting 10s of millions just to make their own version of search.

Apple bringing color back to iMacs

Tl:dr

  • The new iMac comes in seven vibrant colors, bringing fresh shades of green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and blue, alongside silver

Our take

We’ve been all over Apple recently, so we just wanted to highlight that they finally gave us something that people want. Remember the OG colored iMacs? Take us back.

Chinese hackers targeted US presidential candidate phones

Tl:dr

  • Chinese hackers targeted data from phones used by former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate as part of what appears to be a wide-ranging intelligence-collection effort

  • It’s unclear what or if any data was actually collected by the hackers

  • Mr. Trump’s team has also been targeted by Iranian hackers

Our take

It’s honestly a little surprising that this doesn’t happen more often. It feels like any messaging app is “hackable” these days.

It’s also a little confusing that people at this level don’t have more secure options – could be some user error on the Trump team.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is going after the SEC

Tl;dr

  • Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said an apology is owed to Americans for the damage done to the crypto space by the SEC.

  • Armstrong published a compilation of conflicting statements made by the SEC throughout the years

Our take

Lfg Brian. If you’re a longtime NoFomo reader, you’re well versed in how all over the place the SEC has been.

Armstrong said that while this may not undo the damage done, it would begin to restore trust in government institutions. We couldn’t agree more. Let’s just all get on the same page and help obviously beneficial technology grow responsibly.

Waymo raises $5.6B from outside investors

Tl;dr

  • Waymo’s parent company, Alphabet, led the round, which included investments from Andreessen Horowitz, Fidelity, Perry Creek, Silver Lake, Tiger Global and T. Rowe Price

  • Alphabet’s driverless car unit now has vehicles operating in San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles.

  • Its robot taxis are now completing over 100,000 rides each week in San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles, double its number in May

  • Waymo will be operating in Austin, Texas, and Atlanta by 2025 through a partnership with Uber

Our Take

It’s tough to comprehend having that much cash on hand, but good for them.

There’s still some regulatory problems with large scale driverless vehicles, but it seems that we are getting closer to it being a reality. As long as the police can stop pulling them over, we’re all for more Waymos on the streets.
