In AI land, the Altman story only gets sketchier – with the development of AGI appearing to be a core factor in the Board’s hasty firing.

Sam Got Fired For Slowing AI Development 🙇♂️
Well, a few days have passed since the OpenAI saga and of course some clarity is now shining through like a Bob Marley harmony.
As it turns out, OpenAI staff researchers wrote a letter to the Board ahead of Sam’s four-day exile, citing serious concern over commercializing AI advances before fully understanding the consequences for humanity.
Sounds pretty reasonable? Basically, there’s this project called Q* (pronounced Q star not Q-anon lol) at OpenAI that seems like a darling child on the path to AGI.
Right now, it’s just acing fifth grade math test like a Jeff Foxworthy rerun, but researchers find the technology extremely promising and terrifying at the same time.
To paraphrase the words of Altman himself, it’s like pulling back the veil of ignorance and pushing forward the face of discovery at the same time.
So Altman and some of his senior colleagues sounded the alarm. And the Board didn’t like what they were hearing, so they threw a hail mary and canned Sam.
And now were back to square one, and it’s unclear if Sam has more leverage with public praise beneath his feet or if the Board convinced him to let robots destroy humanity. Only time will tell.
