In the news yesterday alone, "Elon Musk predicts AI will overtake human intelligence next year. ‘Social Order Could Collapse’ in AI Era, Two Top Japan Companies Say".

Listen, we’re all for the end-of-world rhetoric if you have some data to back your claims. But in truth, the majority of tech execs doomsdaying humanity are completely detached from reality. With enough money to feed ten families, they are operating on a different plane than 99% of humanity.

Yes. The modern world is overdependent on digital servers and institutions, and if we lost Internet connection for more than a few days millions would die. Our systems are fragile. That is for certain.

But at the same time, humans are remarkably adaptable. A software engineer’s imagined depiction of an apocalyptic future controlled by robots might not be as juicy for a patriotic pizza shop owner, or truck driver from Montana, who’d rather have a human hand them change than a kiosk. Even if it is more inefficient.

It’s also hard to take someone’s opinions too seriously when they haven’t had a human experience comparable to an NYC subway ride in over two decades, despite how much of a “common man” they project themselves to be (cough cough Elon).

Remember, high IQs don’t correlate with social intelligence. And understanding humanity’s future development alongside AI requires a strong pulse on human desire.

Harvard sociologists are super smart too, but that doesn’t mean they have a clue what they average human thinks of them.
